Case Study - Baldur's Gate 3

This is a case study on the recently released Baldur's Gate 3, taking a closer look at what some usability pain points were for users post launch.

This is meant to show options and possible solutions, fully acknowledging that these quality of life elements could not be addressed due to technical limitations or time constraints on Larian Studios.

Managing Non-Party Companions

The Problem

In Baldur's Gate 3, the player is able to adventure with 3 other companions. Players can only manage items or level up companions who are currently in the party. This means that the player will not be able to give an item to a companion who isn't currently in the party. Players will need to first dismiss members on their current party then ask the companion to join the party. Only then can the companion level up or change their equipment.

The Solution

While in camp, add a widget (top-left) to show all the companions not currently in the party. Similar to interacting with the party's portraits, double clicking on the portrait for non-party members will focus on them and give the player control and access to leveling up and managing items without needing to swap party members.

In addition to the quick selection, I added a button to swap party members to efficiently swap the adventuring party without needing to walk to the companions to recruit them.

Because I've been sticking to my main companions, I've neglected my other companions waiting to be leveled up.
